“Living in a box”-grade 1-3

This was an incredible project and enjoyed by both myself & my students!
Technique: recycled tins, pencil & fine liner

We usually work in big, loud & bright, so this was new experience for my students, working in miniature.

At first they were a little reluctant but once they started, they really they got into it with all their hearts. It was amazing to see the length of detail they got into & the quietness it gave them and the feeling of success to finish a little masterpiece! It really was so peaceful & gratifying!

They first drew the outlines in pencil & then in fine liner. Then they colored in their fine details with pencil colours(brightly & enjoyably)

Since the beginning of the year I have been collecting tins & finally some of the kids & members of the staff also helped me .I carefully washed & dried them .

Laminated the beautiful pictures & stuck them inside the boxes.

I also stuck a small loop of string on the back so that they can be hang up on the walls.

The amazing thing about this project was not only do they look absolutely beautiful, but also the level of success & enjoyment the kids got out of it. Because of its size the kids that don’t normally excel in art managed to succeed with greatness!

זה היה פרויקט מהנה ומאתגר גם עבורי וגם עבור התלמידים שלי. בדרך כלל הילדים רגילים לעבוד על פורמטים גדולים ורחבים, אך הפעם הייתה להם התנסות חווייתית חדשה- עבודה בגודל מיניאטורי. בהתחלה הילדים היו חשדנים, אך ברגע שהחלו לעבוד, נכנסו לתהליך וגילו את האפשרות לעבוד בקטן, הם נרתמו לכך בכל ליבם. הריכוז, השקט וכניסה לכל הפרטים העדינים ביותר, הסבלנות שנדרשה לכך ותחושת היכולת והמסוגלות להגיע לתוצר כל כך אסתטי- כל אלה הביאו ליצירות אמנות קטנטנות, מעשה ידיהם וגאווה גדולה לי ולהם. השלווה, לצד תוצרים כה יפים- כל אלה עושים את היצירות לכל כך מיוחדות.

תיאור התהליך- בהתחלה הילדים התבקשו לצייר בקווי מתאר, ואחר כך מילאו בפרטים ובצבעי עפרון. אני אוספת את קופסאות השימורים מתחילת השנה ובסיוע של צוות בית הספר הגענו למספר רב שלהם. את הציורים הקטנים ניילנתי והכנסתי בזהירות אל תוך הקופסאות הנקיות. כדי שיהיה קל להציגם על הקיר בתערוכה, הדבקתי חוט.

מה שמדהים בפרויקט הזה- זה לא רק יצירות האמנות היפות, אלא הערך של תחושת ההצלחה וההנאה הגדולה שליוותה את הילדים. הגודל המוקטן זימן ליצירה אפילו ילדים שבדרך כלל מתקשים לעסוק בחומרי האמנות.

Indian Elephants-Inspired by "More"

I work as a roaming Art Teacher for grades 1-3 in Ben Tzvi Primary School in Afula once a week.I work through a wonderful organization called Keren Karev.

I have 2 classes of each grade and 143 pupils all in all! And teach them ALL in 1 day!

It’s definitely quite a challenge, but ever so rewarding!!And I love it!!!!

I am also a Children’s Book Illustrator and wanted to share one of my stories with my students.

I chose “More” a fable set in India written by the wonderful & talented Enid Richemont from England. We published it as a digitalbook

I copied the book  all on a disc-on-key and showed them the pictures on the screen, translating the story into Hebrew for them. They sat mesmerized for a full 20 minutes!!!Wow!it was great!

I pointed out the bold & bright colours, the patterns, the decorative details of the artworks. They were well impressed that their art teacher had actually illustrated this book!

I chose to take one element out of the story & teach them how to draw it, it was the elephant.

We used pastels and watercolors, adding gold gouache & beads for decoration.

We used 2 lessons; some classes even took another lesson to continue decorating!

Thanks to Patsy from Deep Space Sparkle I was able to tackle portraits! I bought Patsy’s amazing PDF “Fun with Portraits” it is fantastically laid out & very helpful! Thank you!!! As always soooo inspiring!

We took 2 lessons to complete our portraits .I bought some mirrors & showed the children how beautiful they are .They loved this!

We worked with pastels, watercolors & gouache using artlines for our outlines.

Alice in Wonderland

As part of the art program I teach through Keren Karev "Alice in Wonderland" was on the charts.

We were given great posters of Alice and her adventures which I showed the kids. They then told me that they had a book and we looked at the pictures together.

My grade 2’s are very creative, but also very active so I like to give them 3D options. I am constantly on the lookout & collecting all sorts of goodies. I had collected a whole box of cards that weren't full packs.

Add some plasticine, match sticks & marker pens & there you have it!

Georgia O'Keeffe Flowers

Hi! I work as a roaming Art Teacher for grades 1-3 in Ben Tzvi in Afula once a week.

It’s definitely quite a challenge, but ever so rewarding!!And I love it!!!!

Inspired by the wonderfully bright, vivid & larger than life flowers of Georgia O'Keeffe I decided to do a project with the kids. It worked well as it also tied in with spring.

I also took the opportunity of teaching them about the colour-wheel & contrasting colours.

I introduced them to Georgia O'Keeffe and we looked at her amazing paintings that I made posters of.

I told them to imagine themselves as being as small as a beetle or fairy & feel the huge size of the flower. I instructed them to try to reach at least 3 sides of the paper.

We worked on black paper with oil pastels (grade 3’s) & blue paper (grade 2’s)

We also looked at how the pastels came out on black paper & how if you added white it changed the outcome also gave out small printed colour-wheels and encouraged them to use contrasting colours in their backgrounds. They also loved discovering new colours by mixing 2 colours together.

I took 2 lessons for this project although some did manage to finish in 1.

I was most concerned that the boys wouldn't want to draw flowers but they loved it too!

The results were spectacular & we were all very happy & excited !!!

I cant wait to hang them up!!!

A Map of the World -Together we make something new

I work as a roaming Art Teacher for grades 1-3 in Ben Tzvi in Givat haMoreh-outside Afula once a week.

I have 2 classes of each grade and 143 pupils all in all! And teach them ALL in 1 day!

It’s definitely quite a challenge, but ever so rewarding!!And I love it!!!!

This was a project I did together with my grade 3’s.We had a quotation to express as an artwork. (In Hebrew obviously)-Loosely translating to small things together making something new .With my love for collage I wanted to create a large picture that everyone could do a small part of it .I thought immediately of Van Gogh’s corn fields, but after talking to my instructor (Michal) we thought it would be great to do something that would also go hand in hand with the motto of this year “I’m different”.

After some thinking I decided to do a map of the world.(it also has room for stars & a funky frame)

I have wonderful pieces of cardboard cut into squares, put them all together & drew the map. I colour coded it & all it was ready for the kids.

I got the kids to work in pairs and gave them glue, magazines and coloured paper .They really got the concept of collaging this time & it was great fun!

With my love of bold colours, and collage I thought it would be fantastic to make a “quilt” of hearts with all my students, each class one of their own.

My aim is to print them up as postcards for each kid….but that’s another story!

 I was blown away at the amazing success of the results! Each picture on its own was great…but putting them all together, now that was amazing!

The Underwater World: Grade 1- 3 (November 2013)

I work as a roaming Art Teacher for grades 1-3 in Ben Tzvi in Afula once a week.

I have 2 classes of each grade and 143 pupils all in all! And teach them ALL in 1 day!

It’s definitely quite a challenge, but ever so rewarding!!And I love it!!!!

I wanted to do a project with all 3 of my grades .Something that we could collaborate to make something special! To show them that each on his own is special & beautiful but together we are amazing!

I thought underwater would be something bright & colourful!

I must say I was a bit apprehensive but it was a very successful, though hard working project!

The grade 3’s started with the background, I took them out of the classroom and I must say it was a bit wild!but they had fun & made beautiful backgrounds! I decided not to take the others out as 45 mins just isn’t enough!

The grade 2’s & 1’s were instructed to draw fish and seaweed (I prepared some worksheets with ideas which I handed out for those that wanted inspiration) I reminded the kids that if we copy something we must always change some details to make it our own!

I then took home all the paintings of fish and that’s when the hard work started I cut out all the fish & stuck them on the backgrounds (a surprisingly long process! Really it took me over 3 hours!)

Just look at the wonderful results!!!We are all very proud!

Lesson :7 -13/11/13 -Helping Hands

This is the year I officially started teaching art lessons in the public schools through a program called Keren Karev.
I teach grades 1-3 at Ben Tzvi in Afula once a week.

It’s definitely quite a challenge but ever so rewarding!!And I love it!!!!

Inspired by a posts that I found in Pinterest I decided to make a poster for the walls using the children’s hands.
My school (Ben Tzvi) is very much concentrating on the motto of reaching high goals & developing the individual to his /her full and amazing potential so I thought it would be most appropriate! I thought it would be something great to do with the grade 1’s & 2’s.
 We used permanent markers for the outlines. Most of the kids managed to “trace “their own hands but it was actually quite a challenge for them, so I walked around helping them. They then decorated & coloured in the hands with colour markers in any colourful way that they chose.
I then cut out each and every hand and stuck them down (which was a surprisingly long process) but the results were astounding!

Lesson 4: 23 & 30/10/13-Van Gogh’s Sunflowers

Today would be our first experience with paints! I was both very excited & nervous!!I don’t have a home class room, no basin & I have full classes of up to 28 kids….and only 45 mins. to do it all!!EEEK! But my teachers are a great help! (The homeroom teacher stays with me) I don’t know what I would do without them!!!

We rearranged the desks to make groups, I brought a bucket of water (my mobile sink), tin cans for each desk and we got started!

Inspired by the beautiful work my private classes came up with I decided to do this at school too!

I showed them Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, some of them had seen it before. We talked about the shapes & colours and I showed them how to draw a simple vase. I told them they could decorate the vase as they wished. We also saw how if we added a line at the base of the picture we could have a table.

We used permanent markers for the outlines, watercolors & blue tempera for the backgrounds.

Though we were stressed for time (it could easily be a double lesson) It was a very successful event! And the results are superb!!!!

 

The grade 3’s wrote tests that morning so I had a small group of kids to work with! We were allowed to work in the library .We painted tortoises and had the best time! The grade 3’s painted their sunflowers the following week on the 30th

Lesson 3:16/10/13-Beetles,bugs & butterflies

I don’t have an art room as yet and so no easy access to water and a basin so paints are a more advanced option. But I really want to add colour to the kids’ lives and the school corridors!! So with guidance of Patty of Deep Space Sparkle I decided to venture into bugs. Simple yet colourful and full of pattern!

I was busy contemplating as to how I would introduce the kids to the bugs when on the road I spotted this incredible creature! Sent from the Gods!

Lesson 2:9/10/13-Mirror Mobile Mandalas

I wanted to start them off on something simple yet colourful and fun….it being my birthday I decided to do something I love!I love colour, pattern and mobiles... and so inspired by Paintedpaper’s Mexican mirrors we made mandalas that we could hang up as mobiles.

I gave each kid a circle drawn on colour paper and on silver paper(my hubby and I sat up all night drawing them-as I only have 45 mins with each class)

We used black marker pens, pastles and felt-tip pens.

The results were amazing !Big smiles all around!
