Art with a splash of English-Collage Owls(my Studio & Tal Menashe)

After reading “Wow said the Owl”(Tim Hopgood) I was greatly inspired by the pictures and the story …a great way for my kids to learn the colours!

I absolutely love working in textures & collage, so this was a must!

And my kids have finally caught onto the wonders of collaging! Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the first time you collage with the kids …the second time round it just clicks!

Art with a splash of English –Paper Mache Bowls

(This project was a double lesson with grade 1’s)

As a kid I loved Paper Mache so I decided that we would make bowls together.

Teaching English in a fun & creative way I decided today we read out the recipe in English. Once we had followed the instructions we had a lovely pasty, sloshy mush to work with. We tore bits of newspaper and layered our balloons or bowls (don’t forget to line them with a generous helping of Vaseline-so that it doesn’t stick) until we reached a decent thickness. The kids loved the therapeutic feeling of massaging the balloon!!!

The next week they were delighted to see the results! And were quick to start painting.

Being a Children’s Book Illustrator myself I like to incorporate stories & books wherever I can! While painting I read them the wonderful story “Too Much Talk” a West African tale which was thoroughly enjoyed!!

Their bowls were a great success! I’m not sure whether I preferred using the balloons or the small bowls!? The results are quite different! I especially liked the bowl that wasn’t cut around the edges!!

Art with a splash of English –Baskets of Fruit

Being a Children’s Book Illustrator myself I like to incorporate stories & books wherever I can!

Greatly inspired by this book “Handa’s Surprise” by Eileen Browne I decided to do an activity, for my grade 1’s, based on it.

After reading them the story, which they loved, we got to learn all the names for fruit, as well as the animals that surprise us!

I gave them each a paper plate and we looked decorative baskets from Africa. They then decorated their plates with a black marker using ideas of the patterning that we had looked at.

We had a bowl of fruit on the table and they got to draw the different fruit. We used marker pens & my watercolour pencils from Caran d’ache .We then carefully cut out the fruit and filled our baskets.

The kids were delighted and enjoyed every moment!!

Art with a Splash of English- Africa

Teaching English in a fun and creative way to my class of older girls (grade 4) I decided today we would draw African woman carrying baskets or clay-pots. We leant about patterns, inks and the richness of Arican colours. We were inspired by my series of books of "African Design" and each given a black marker pen . Some of the girls insisted on working in pencil first. We then painted with my marvelous water-color inks. Just look at the beautiful results!!!
